Budva: the story of Abigail & John

Have you ever been to the "Montenegrin Miami"? That would be BUDVA! A popular tourist resort in Montenegro, with beaches and vibrant nightlife, known as "Budvanska Rivijera". The place attracts lots of tourists from the Balkan Area, Eastern Europe & Russia. During the summer in particular, both the day and night-life offer wonderful opportunities to enjoy theatre plays and performances, music concerts and all sorts of entertainment programs. Budva is developed around a small peninsula, and it has an interesting 'rocky' architecture, as well as it is sporting some 35 rocky beaches with loud music, being considered a bit cheesy. That's also because they practice the well known trick of displaying half naked girls to attract you in restaurants.  I simply think is super vibrant all together and it gives you a nice uplifted feeling when you walk by. I never feel offended by beauty, except when is taken advantage of.

I had the pleasure to be there with a huge group made up of Macedonians, Turkish people and of course my lovely Italian ladies. We were all guided by a keen Montenegrin girl named Tina. We packed ourselves in Blagoj's van ( our Macedonian trainer), and left the town of Ulcinj, where we were running a theatre course, to have a nice & cozy break in Budva & the mighty island of Sveti Stefan. Sveti Stefan, is fairly close to Budva, as is another luxurious resort, that of Miločer. Sveti Stefan is more special though, since is where George Clooney reportedly spent his honeymoon with the adorable Amal. When we got there, however the resort was closed, some multi millionaire guys spent some 2 million dollars to rent Sveti Stefan the whole month, to discuss about the manufacturing of obviously, expensive cars. You can check out the entire article chuck full of information on Sveti Stefan here.

When you opt for using a car, expect a very crammed traffic! Streets in Montenegro are very narrow, and wherever there is space available a hotel is planted! It is very possible that your time driving will double, especially in the evenings. Otherwise, you can reach Montenegro from pretty much every airport in Europe. Budva is just 65 km away from the capital, Podgorica.

By the way, i have to give our Montenegrin girl,Tina, a bow, for scaring Blagoj and moving his van away from where he parked it. She is such an amazing driver, that she could do film stunts! Concerning parking spaces in Budva, they are mostly paid, so we found a nice little spot just outside the city. If you intend to use a taxi, make sure the meter is set to avoid a rip off.

The Old Town of Budva ( Stari Budva) displays many narrow streets, alleys and small squares with precious monuments of different Mediterranean cultures that have marked the development of the town. Also there are boutiques selling luxury goods at extremely high prices. Generally speaking, the people in Budva are overly nice, they let you take pictures of them in the streets etc. You can enter in Old Town from one of five entrance doors.  And..it happens to be adjacent to the Marina Bay, which in turn is filled with restaurants & jaw-dropping yachts, moored by their obviously very wealthy owners. That being said, expect the prices of accomodation & food to be a little high in the area.

The whole of the Old Town, lies on a little island that was connected to the land by a sandbar and in time turned into a peninsula. It is surrounded by ramparts originating from the XV century including a medieval fortification system with city gates, defense walls and towers.

So, if you are still following my writing by now, I'd like to tell you a story ...I was once in an airport & and I saw a t-shirt on someone on which it said " speed is sex, distance is love". Don't go thinking about the crazy love, distance love is a gentle, platonic one. Instantly it reminded me of the story of Abigail that our Macedonian trainer, Blagoj, told us in his van while traveling from Ulcinj to Budva. I always get great insights via storytelling.

Abigail was a wise girl living on a secluded island. Her lover, John, was living on the continent, and they were connected through a bridge. One day, a storm came and broke the bridge. Abigail couldn't go see John. She cried, and cried and cried, for nights in a row, and eventually found Sinbad the Sailor whom had a boat.

Sinbad proposed her to have sex with him, in exchange of transferring her on the continent with his ship, to see John. Abigail cried even more, and went to her mother for advice. Her mother told her: "you are a grown up Abigail, I trust you can make your own decision." After a night in distress, Abigail decides to sleep with Sinbad the Sailor.

When she reached John s house, she told him everything, and he sent her away from his sight :" go away, you are not welcome in my house".

She left in the streets and found Tom, John's best friend, whom listened to her story and promised her to go talk to John. Just that when he reached John's house, he punches John and leaves, meets Abigail and starts a relationship with her.

The question was, which of these characters is the worst? I said...it's Abigail, if you love someone you don't go screw around sailors ( hello std!). Second is the mother for being a bad mother, third is john for being a moron, than Tom, than Sinbad. It turns out, I was psychologically wrong: Sinbad is in the middle, he is number 3, for being just a temptation, he is there no matter what, last worse is John- we don't know from the story if he tried to search for her, and by sending Abigail away, he offers her time to remorse. The worst is Tom for being a bad friend to John, followed by an unnatural mother.

My conclusion was there can be many times when we ourselves play Sinbad to other people and disregard the consequences of our actions. Abigail can be easily replaced with a man, and John with a woman, they don't need to follow the original gender order. But most important is, to know when to stop playing whatever it is that becomes hurtful to other people and to us, we can take many roles in this life and not one of them is definitive, unless it destroys our peace of mind. Nothing is more valuable than your own peace of mind. I wish you to stay well, blessed, radiant, magical & to visit Budva: it's really a hidden gem!

And don't forget to take a picture with the dancing girl statue, they say it's a must! Tina actually emphasized: " you will regret if you don't take the picture". And voila...

You can find the Dancing Girl Statue, outside the Old Town on your way to Mogren beach.

As you can see, it's a topless girl doing the dancer's pose (yoga), though some  say that this is a statue of a young girl who drowned here. It's uncertain, so just take the picture.

They say it's a must that you should appear in it as well...

Special thanks to my wonderful friends, theatre & youth work trainers, that made this story possible!
